Monday night marked the 20th anniversary of the highly acclaimed AA Hospitality Awards. The glittering ceremony celebrates the best of British hospitality including the UK’s finest hotels, restaurants and pubs, and the stars behind them.

This year turned out to be rather remarkable for Devon hotels with not one, but two critically acclaimed venues in the region walking away with well deserved accolades.

Firstly, Devon Hotels member Bovey Castle was crowned with 5 AA red stars. Making it just one of two hotels with 5 red stars in the entire region, this award celebrates the highest accommodation rating under the AA scheme.

The red star status compliments Bovey Castle’s culinary excellence since their Great Western Restaurant was awarded three rosettes by the AA last year.

Restaurants with the coveted three rosettes are deemed to be outstanding establishments that demand recognition well beyond their local area and just 10% of the AA’s restaurants achieve this level.

Lastly, the magnificent Michael Wignall, executive head chef at Gidleigh Park hotel, Chagford, ensured the top accolade of five AA rosettes was retained for the property, owned by the Brownsword Group.

Michael offers a memorable culinary journey and in addition to the 5 rosettes, Gidleigh also boasts 2 Michelin stars.

The AA introduced the top rating of five Rosettes in 1991. They’re defined as “awarded only when the cooking is at the pinnacle of achievement. Flavour combinations and textures show a faultless sense of balance, giving each dish an extra dimension”.
