Summer is almost here, so it’s time to find some fun ways to keep the whole family entertained over the school holidays in Devon! Look no further…Devon is the place to be this summer.

We’ve compiled a list of the top 5 family friendly things to do in Devon over the warmer months. Make this summer a fun and memorable one for all the family by exploring everything this fantastic county has to offer!

Get Outside

The summer months are the perfect time to make the most of all the beautiful outdoor spaces in Devon. With sandy beaches, scenic foot and cycle paths and the countryside always a short distance away, there really is no excuse to be stuck indoors over the summer holidays.

Try Croyde Bay beach in North Devon for a popular surfing destination, or Wembury beach for some brilliant rockpools. If walking is more your thing, Dartmoor National Park offers miles of footpaths and bridleways that allow you to explore the beautiful countryside and see some amazing natural sights that both adults and children will enjoy. To get fit and have fun at the same time, Devon Cycle Hire is situated on the Granite Way trail (in Okehampton), and is open for the whole summer. Both adult and child bikes are available to hire, along with tandems and buggies, meaning the whole family can take part!

Crealy Adventure Park

Situated just a short drive from Exeter city centre, Crealy Adventure Park is known for providing fun for the whole family. With over 60 rides and attractions, children of all ages will enjoy a day out at the South West’s number one family attraction. ‘The Twister’ rollercoaster and ‘Tidal Wave’ log flume will appeal to the older kids, while the ‘Dino Jeeps’ and ‘Safari Express’ are suitable for slightly younger children. Crealy guarantees a fantastic family day out, so make sure you visit this summer!

Animal Fun

Young children love animals, so why not give them a chance to get up close and personal with them at one of Devon’s several animal attractions? The National Marine Aquarium in Plymouth is the UK’s largest aquarium. Their Atlantic Ocean exhibit is also home to the deepest tank in the UK. Discover a wide variety of marine life, including fishes you already know about, as well as some you’ve probably never heard of before! If your children prefer land animals, give Paignton Zoo, Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh or the The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth a visit, which all guarantee a fun filled family day out.

Music Events

If your children are now in their teenage years, chances are they are even more likely to complain about being bored over the long summer holidays. But with the wide variety of music events held across Devon over the next few months, there is no reason for them to be! MTV Crashes is coming to Plymouth on the 27th and 28th July this year with Sigma, Busted, Louisa Johnson and Martin Garrix as just some of the headliners. Olly Murs is also performing at Powderham Castle, Exeter on the 29th July and tickets are still available! Also at Powderham Castle this summer is ‘Let’s Rock Exeter!’ – a retro music festival which advertises itself as family friendly, taking place on the 1st July.

Other Special Events

There are a whole host of other events taking place across Devon throughout the summer holidays. Why not try some of these with your family?

British Firework Championships in Plymouth (9th and 10th August): two nights of fantastic firework displays, along with a Fun Fair on Plymouth Hoe.

Open Air Cinema at Powderham Castle (10th August): Powderham Castle are showing one of the most loved family films of all time, The Lion King, as part of their open-air cinema screenings taking place throughout the summer.
