Hotel Barcelona – Environmental Impact and Sourcing Local Produce
We recognise that our activities have a wider influence on our community and take account of our social and environmental impacts. We support schools, charities and voluntary organisations in our community. We contribute to community programmes by working with and promoting involvement in local partnerships.
We minimise our impact on the environment through our recycling and green policies. We promote these and other sustainable initiatives and practice in all area’s of the business. We recycle glass, cardboard, paper, magazines, plastic, metal and soap. Our recycling initiatives have resulted in huge savings. An example being we have reduced our landfill pick up from 18 bins per week to 3 bins per week.
We have a successful green committee in the Hotel with representatives from each department. From this we have set up a staff green incentive scheme to encourage all staff to get involved and not just management. This committee ensures we live our green policy in our every day work for example all staff makes an effort to switch off lights, TV’s and computers when not in use.
We source our food locally and very much buy food that is in season. Traceability is an important element of our menu and is a key consideration when choosing suppliers. We keep our food miles to the absolute minimum.
Any future refurbishment plans will take into consideration our environmental impact in order to reduce our energy consumption.
We were delighted to receive a bronze award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme, however, our main motivation for our green activities is that it is the right thing to do for the environment and our guests expect and appreciate these efforts.
