A Rainy Day in Devon

Head south to the town of Buckfastleigh and visit the famous Buckfast Abbey. Visit the great Abbey church with its many art treasures, rebuilt on its medieval foundations by the Benedictine monks, discover the surrounding historic buildings and tour the audio visual and exhibition centre to learn more about monastic life. Stop for lunch at the Grange Restaurant, a stunning building which incorporates the Abbey’s North Gate. Shop for souvenirs at the gift shop and maybe some Buckfast Tonic Wine at the monastic produce shop.

A short distance away is the start of the South Devon Railway, and you can hop on the vintage bus service from Buckfast Abbey to Buckfastleigh Station to catch one of the magnificent steam locomotive trains to Totnes. Return to Buckfastleigh and have a look around the museum, workshop and historic steam and diesel engines before heading home at the end of the day.
