Buy Local Food Event
2nd September 2010 - Beaworthy
OVER 30 local food & drink producers will be showcasing their goods at a Free Food & Drink Devon event being held in affiliation with the Ruby Country Partnership at the Cookworthy Forest Centre, Beaworthy, between Holsworthy and Hatherleigh on 2nd September 2010 from 10.30 to 3.30pm. The producers will be all available to talk about their products while visitors savour, taste or buy in this beautifully wooded location. The event offers a great opportunity to get to know where your local food comes from and how to save on food miles by supporting local businesses. There will be a wide variety of produce available to taste and buy including cheeses, chutneys, beef and lamb, preserves, jams, cakes and pastries, wine and cider. This free event, with refreshments and light lunches available, is open to both the public and commercial buyers and will be especially useful for hotels, B & B's and restaurants to source new products for their menus - 'Local Food' is definitely what visitors to the region want to eat. As the event is to be held at the end of the summer holidays there will be entertainment for children as well as free, wonderful walks around the forest, woods and streams. Cookworthy Forest with its wonderful woodland walks is an ideal location to enjoy local food and drink which Linda Davies of the Ruby Country Initiative and owner of West Lake Farm recognises is vitally important to both visitors and locals alike. "We know that local food is one of the main reasons people come to Devon and hospitality businesses that use local food benefit from enhancing the visitor experience making them want to return time and time again. This event will be a great opportunity for local businesses to source new products for their menus”. Robin Deitch, Food & Drink Devon Network Co-ordinator said: "The previous Food & Drink Devon events have been a great success, with over 3,700 happy visitors enjoying the latest one. The producers all benefited from making new long term sales leads. These events are a great opportunity to network with like minded businesses and show how important local food is to the region." The event is organised by the Ruby Country Partnership and Food & Drink Devon who offer business support and training opportunities to small scale local food and drink producers throughout Devon. The Food & Drink Devon Network Development Project is funded by Greater Dartmoor LEAF, incorporating funding from the EU, Defra, SWRDA and LEADER and West Devon Borough Council, South Hams District Council, Teignbridge District Council and Food & Drink Devon. For generations the second Tuesday in September has been Fair Day at Widecombe-in-the-Moor, a celebration of Moorland life with something for locals and visitors alike. So what do you want from a country fair? Because this year, we have even more than usual. Animals? We have primestock and livestock classes to be judged including Widecombe’s own white-faced Dartmoor sheep. We have sheep shearing competitions (back by popular demand) running all day. Horses and ponies galore including a musical ride and Ben May and his Heavy Horses. You can even race your own dog against all comers! Competitions? The competitions aren’t just for the animals. Why not try your hand at bale-tossing or tug-of-war? Or even the Uncle Tom Cobley downhill race from the skyline to the Fair Field – choose your own way down (on foot of course!), you just have to get there first! Food? Local food and local produce are available throughout the day, with the usual beer tent, tea, coffee, cakes and lots of food stalls. And still there’s more – all day long in the main ring there is a series of events including parades, demonstrations and competitions. There is a display of vintage machinery including static engines and vehicles. Uncle Tom Cobley and the old grey mare will be there – you all know the song. Plus a lively commentary by Tony Beard – the Widecombe Wag. And this year there is a very special Rural Skills exhibit created by the children of Widecombe School.
