The traditional ritual of making and drinking tea is celebrated in this very special tea house in the heart of old Exeter opposite the cathedral. Tea on the Green offers a unique range of loose leaf teas, including green, black and semi-fermented teas from around the world, and the amazing flower burst teas, which open as a full flower in the base of the cup.
Tea on the Green also serves fabulous coffees. The proprietor is an espresso expert and prides himself on the quality of the café’s drinks, produced by a stunning machine that looks more like a sports car than a piece of catering equipment!
Tea on the Green is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and tea and is known for its locally sourced produce, innovative mix of traditional and modern dishes, and its genuinely friendly service. The full English breakfast is topped only by the full Ulster breakfast, complete with black pudding; lunch can be anything from a quick tasty panini to a full roast lamb tagine; while the range of cream teas is particularly unusual, from the basic scone, jam and cream option, to smoked salmon sandwiches and champagne, or local cheeses and cheese scones for the more savoury palate.
There are tables outside where you can sit and enjoy a local beer, glass of wine or ginger beer, and watch the world go by on the ancient cobbled road around the cathedral green. There is a quiet room upstairs (available for private hire too) with fabulous views, and an uncluttered interior with scrubbed wooden floors and tables, Chinese fabric hangings, and blue willow pattern china against cool white walls.
Takeaways are available – so if you are working nearby and need sustenance or fancy a picnic on the grass outside, Tea on the Green is the place to go. Families are welcome and there is even a special tea for tiny tots. Well-behaved dogs are allowed inside.
