A City Day Out

A City Day Out

Start the day with a visit to the stunning Exeter Cathedral, to admire the architecture and longest stretch of unbroken Gothic vaulting in the world! Have a walk around the historic buildings of the Cathedral Yard and visit Hanson’s Restaurant to enjoy a pot of coffee whilst looking out over the Cathedral Green.

For some retail therapy, Exeter has a fantastic choice. Head to Princesshay for a contemporary shopping experience. Opened in Autumn 2007, this multi-million pound retail and leisure development in the heart of the city offers over 60 new and exciting shops, cafes and restaurants in a pedestranised open space. Head to the cobbled Gandy Street for independent boutiques, jewellers, home designs and unique gifts, or take a walk down to Fore Street for specialist and alternative shops, hidden away within arcades off the main street.

Stop for lunch at At Angela’s on New Bridge Street to enjoy the best and freshest of quality local produce, before heading back up to the Cathedral Yard to join an afternoon Red Coat Guided Tour and discover the hidden secrets of this historic city. You may like to stop for afternoon tea at No. 21 Cathedral Yard to revive you for an exciting late afternoon visit to Exeter’s Underground Passages. You can take a guided tour of these fascinating underground vaults, which are dark and narrow – the only passages of this kind open to the public in Britain.

Exeter has been voted as one of the top places to eat out in the UK, so head out to enjoy dinner in one of the many city centre restaurants, such as Michael Caines Restaurant at the Abode Royal Clarence, where you can reflect on your day with the stunning backdrop of the Cathedral lit up in the evening. Spend the remainder of the evening sampling local wines and ales in one of the city’s lively bars or traditional pubs, or enjoy a show at the Exeter Northcott or Exeter’s Barnfield Theatre.
