The bustling bar and lounges are as popular with locals as they are with visitors, helping to give the hotel a real sense of place in the town.  You’ll find a range of individually-styled bedrooms, from cosy classic rooms to sumptuous four-posters with spa baths.  There are convenient ground-floor rooms for those who need easier access, and single rooms for solo travellers.

The hotel’s award-winning Woburn Restaurant offers a wide-ranging menu to suit all tastes – from a simple one-course lunch to an outstanding three course meal – all prepared using the finest ingredients from Devon’s farmers, fishermen and producers.

As the birthplace of the Devon Cream Tea, it’s not surprising to learn that The Bedford Hotel is the place to go locally for a traditional afternoon tea.  Finger sandwiches, cakes, and superb warm scones served with lashings of strawberry jam and clotted cream.

In the warmer months, the hotel’s gardens are a delight.  The sheltered front garden is a nice spot for a drink, or head to the Walled Garden on a sunny afternoon for a little relaxation in a gloriously secret setting.

The Bedford Hotel is a top choice for weddings, with the historic Woburn Room for a stylish wedding ceremony, and the striking Gallery 26 function suite for glittering celebrations.

The hotel boasts a range of conference and meetings facilities, and private dining spaces for family gatherings and events.

The Bedford Hotel Restaurant

Every menu at The Bedford Hotel is based around the finest Devon ingredients, prepared with care and presented with flair.

Start the day with a superb Devon breakfast.  The cold buffet selection includes fresh fruit, cereals, freshly baked pastries and other breakfast treats. Then it’s on the main event – the Full English, beautifully cooked to order using local bacon, sausage, free-range eggs and more.  There are plenty of other breakfast choices on the menu too, including a beautifully presented Eggs Benedict, a vegetarian breakfast, and tasty kippers.

The hotel is bustling with locals at coffee-time, with a selection of barista-style coffees, home-made cookies and pastries.

At lunchtime, choose a simple home-made soup, or something more substantial from the ever-changing brasserie-style menu.

Traditional afternoon tea is served from 3pm, with finger sandwiches, cakes and warm scones (with lashings of strawberry jam and clotted cream naturally).

In the evening, the full menu is available in the restaurant, bar and lounges. The menu is diverse and packed with surprises.  Traditional country-style favourites including fish & chips and sausage & mash sit alongside internationally-inspired dishes such as Lebanese lamb burger and a Nepalese curry.  A simple one-course supper, or an indulgent three-course dinner – the choice is yours.

Location

The Bedford Hotel is ideally situated in the heart of the historic Devon market town of Tavistock, just across from the main market square and the parish church.

Tavistock is an award-winning town, loved for its traditional market, independent shops and riverside walks.  It’s an easy town to stroll around, with rich heritage at every turn.

Head out of town by car, and within a few minutes you’re in Dartmoor National Park, with awe-inspiring landscapes in every direction. Climb a Dartmoor tor, explore picture-postcard-perfect Dartmoor villages, or just enjoy the pleasure of a drive through some of the most spectacular countryside you’ll find anywhere in Britain.

The Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a short drive away. Visit the pretty Tamar riverside village of Calstock, or the beautiful National Trust estate at Cotehele.

If the sea beckons, the coasts of Cornwall and South Devon are within easy reach by car.

For keen walkers, the appeal of the wide-open spaces of Dartmoor is obvious.  For something a little strenuous, explore Drake’s Trail which links Tavistock with Plymouth, mostly along a disused railway line, and can be enjoyed in easy sections.

Tavistock’s new Tourist Information Centre is manned by enthusiastic volunteers who are full of knowledge and advice, helping visitors to make the most of their stay in this beautiful and fascinating part of Devon.
