The Kitchen is tranquillity personified; freshly prepared dishes using local, ethically sourced produce are served as spectacular views over the Sanctuary and the rolling hills of Devon to the sea provide a serene backdrop. This new restaurant also asserts a unique integrity, with all profits supporting the charity’s objectives to support donkey welfare worldwide.

Food & drink

This brand new restaurant has been designed to allow diners to relax in spacious surroundings which are blessed with a modern-rustic charm, while the veranda provides a special dining experience overlooking the donkey’s paddocks and views to the Jurassic Coast.

Enjoy great value, seasonal and wholesome food in a warm and welcoming environment, including hearty breakfasts, delicious lunches and a varied children’s menu as well as drinks, snacks and cakes. Vegetarians and vegans are also well-catered for. 

The Kitchen is the first of the Sanctuary’s exciting new visitor facilities to be introduced in Sidmouth. Admission and parking is free (donations welcome) and food is served from 9am to 5pm daily. Dogs are welcome in The Kitchen and at The Donkey Sanctuary as long as they are kept on a lead.

Breakfast (daily from 9am - 11am)

Veggie breakfast plus a pot of tea or an Americano (VE*)
2 veggie sausages, 2 hash browns, Heinz baked beans, field mushroom, grilled tomato, toast and 2 local free-range eggs (fried, poached or scrambled).

Full English breakfast plus a pot of tea or an Americano
2 rashers of bacon, 1 farmhouse sausage, 2 hash browns, Heinz baked beans, field mushroom, grilled tomato, toast and 2 local free-range eggs (fried, poached or scrambled).

Topped toast
2 slices of white or granary toast topped with; Heinz baked beans (VE), grilled field mushrooms (VE) or 2 local free-range eggs (fried, poached, scrambled) (V).

Breakfast bap
Choose 3 fillings from; bacon, sausage, field mushroom (VE), local free-range egg (V) or hash brown (VE).

Children’s or small breakfast
Choose 4 items from our full English or veggie breakfast (VE*).

Simply toast (VE*)
White, granary or gluten free with butter and preserve of choice.
Lunch menu (served 11.30am - 3pm)

Kitchen crafted paninis
All of the following are served with salted Burts crisps and a simple salad garnish.

Heritage tomato, buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil (V).
Chargrilled vegetables and rocket pesto (VE).
Farmhouse sausage, caramelised onion and tomato and garlic chutney.
Smoked bacon, Somerset brie and cranberry sauce.
Main course (served 11.30am - 3pm)

Soup of the day (VE)
Choice of two soups freshly made in-house using the finest locally sourced ingredients, served with a white, brown or gluten free roll.

Homemade smoky baked beans (VE*)
Served on sourdough toast, topped with local free-range poached eggs, finished with shaved parmesan.

Macaroni and cauliflower cheese (V)
Combining two classics, curled macaroni and local cauliflower is swathed in Hawkridge mature cheddar sauce and served with garlic ciabatta.

Homemade vegetable Balti (VE)
Served with rice, onion bhaji, naan bread, poppadum, mango chutney and minty riata.

West Country braised pork faggot
In a caramelized onion gravy, creamed potatoes and garden peas.

Brixham salmon, smoked haddock and brioche fishcakes
With a lemon mayonnaise, baby leaf salad and caper crisps.

Hand-crafted hamburger
Produced to our own tailored recipe, using only local free-range beef and pork. Served in a brioche bun, with baby gem lettuce and beefsteak tomato, accompanied by dill pickle, mushroom ketchup and our own house slaw.

Add deep-fried potato wedges or a simple side salad.

Cakes

For cake lovers they have a mouth-watering selection of locally made cakes (including gluten free cakes), flapjacks, biscuits and Devon cream teas on the main service counter.

Set along the historic Jurassic Coast and nestled in the tranquil East Devon countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Kitchen is found at The Donkey Sanctuary. With fantastic trails around, you can make a day of it when you eat at The Kitchen!
